OK, this is where you get to learn a bit more about me personally. Well, a
long, long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away……….. oh, wait, guess
we do not need to really go back that far in time now do we.
I came home from the United States Marine Corps in January 1974.
While I was in the Marine Corps, I studied various Martial Arts disciplines
including Southern Style Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do and Jeet Kune Do.
After coming home, I continued my martial arts training and also got into
power lifting. I was a member of the Professional Karate Association, and
fought full contact PKA sanctioned matches.
Because I was fighting in the ring a the time, I knew I also needed to be as
strong as possible and in as good of shape as possible. So I strength
trained, which eventually turned into power lifting.
During more of the 1970's and early 80's, I practiced and I was a certified
trainer who trained both Martial Artists and Power Lifters as well as general
strength training. Admittedly, was not too big on aerobics at the time except
for what endurance I needed to succeed in the ring.
In late 1982, on my way to a tournament of all things, I was broad-sided on
my Harley Motorcycle. I had nearly every bone on my right side broken. For
a while I was told I would never walk again. (So much for doctors 'practicing
After learning to walk again, I spent the next several years working and
raising a family.
In 1997 I was rear ended, again while on the Harley, by some drunks, and
got my back broken, and seriously injured my neck. 10 years later that
same injury caused me to have to have a 3 disc spinal fusion in my neck.
So now I walk around with 3 cadaver bones, a 3.5 inch titanium plate and 8
screws in my neck.
After a short layoff to recover from surgery, I was right back into the gym,
albeit with much lighter weights and quite a few pounds heavier than before
Main point of this story, is really quite simply. I KNOW and I understand
injuries and pain and coming back from the brink. Been there, done that,
got the scars to prove it. I know it is a bit cliché, but in my case, yeah, if I
can do it, there is no reason you cannot do it.
